Being a great page designer is like being great at anything else. It’s easy to learn the big stuff: where to put photos, getting the page elements consistent, etc.
But to be really great, you have to know the intricate stuff. This session is for newspaper designers who want to move beyond a nice page.
TYPE. In the old days (you can decide when those were), type was the first thing you learned about in page design. If you’ve never attended a class on type, it’s time you did.
Tips, Hints, to-dos and don’t-dos for newspaper typography. How you can make your type work for your readers. What you can do to improve your readability. Traps to avoid.

Among the items we’ll cover:

  1. Get the type right or risk losing readers.
  2. word spacing.
  3. line length.
  4. read-over and line skipping.
  5. flush left vs. justified.
  6. text wraps.
  7. the baseline grid.
  8. the rule of three.
  9. serif vs. sans serif: Sans italic | weight | width
  10. type as a visual element.
  11. drop shadow on type.
  12. no funky fonts.
It’s Ed Henninger. He’s the best. Bring two pens. You’ll need them.
